What are 'Good Manufacturing Practices,' and why are they important?

Cholestasys FAQs

What are "good manufacturing practices"?

Good manufacturing practices, or GMPs, are strict, detailed procedures used to ensure quality manufacturing processes of products for human consumption, such as drugs, dietary supplements and food.

Why are they important?

GMPs put in place systems to help prevent product contamination, inconsistency from batch-to-batch, unsanitary manufacturing, errors in product labeling, and an enormous range of other important production activities that can affect human health. If problems do arise, they can be tracked, identified, and solved quickly, through GMP-mandated documentation for all processes, from production of raw ingredients to distribution of final product.

Supplement Facts

Serving Size: 2 capsules

Niacin

Also known as: vitamin B-3, anti-blacktongue factor, niacinamide, 3-pyridine carboxamide, B complex vitamin, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid amide

Niacin, a B complex vitamin, has been used to combat hyperlipidemia and to help lower triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels since the 1950s. It has also been used for improving circulation, easing migraine headaches, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Niacin is water-soluble, and is generally well absorbed when taken orally.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of niacin for vitamin B-3 deficiencies, which may be characterized by dermatitis, dementia or diarrhea.

In a small pre-clinical study, niacin was found to significantly lower plasma triglyceride levels. Niacin appears to give the best results when it is taken orally with healthy, non-fried meals.

Standardized (2.5%) Guggul oleo resin extract

Also known as: Commiphora/Balsamodendrum wightii, guggal, gum guggulu, Indian Bdellium tree, koushika, palankasha, devadhupa

Guggul is an extract of gum resin of the Commiphora mukul tree (myrrh) which natively grows in India. Since 600 BCE, East Asians have been using guggul in Ayurvedic medicine, including the treatment of arthritis, high cholesterol, artherosclerosis, and obesity.

Guggulipid is an extract of guggul and contains plant sterols. It is thought that guggul will offer the most medicinal benefits with the least toxicity if administered in a soluble extract. Among the benefits of guggul are lipid-lowering capabilities, antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory effects.

Clinical studies have suggested that guggul can indeed help to lower triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Experts have also stated that guggul does not appear to trigger serious adverse reactions in those who take it.

Cayenne (Herb Powder)

Also known as: Capsicum, African bird pepper, chili pepper, goat's pod, Zanzibar pepper, grains of Paradise, Louisiana long pepper, ici fructus, red pepper, katuvira

Cayenne is highly valued for its contribution to flavor in South American and Asian cuisine, as well as its health benefits including anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects.

Capsaicin, the active ingredient in cayenne, may help increase energy, reduce fat tissue, and even reduce the rate at which LDL are oxidized.

Cayenne has been orally administered in cases of poor circulation, excessive blood clotting, hyperlipidemia, gas, cramps, and alcoholism. Cayenne has been topically applied to ease shingles, back pain, and muscle spasms. If taken through the nose via nasal irrigation, cayenne may help with headaches and sinus trouble.

Garlic (Herb Powder)

Also known as: ail, poor man’s treacle, stinking rose, Allium sativum, allii sativi bulbus, rason, rust treacle, clove garlic, garlic oil

Historically, garlic has been recognized by ancient Greek physicians, traditional Chinese healers, and 19th century American doctors as a medicinally beneficial food. Garlic contains allicin, which may reduce blood cholesterol and inhibit platelet aggregation.

Garlic has long been used to support numerous aspects of human health. Most popularly, garlic is used for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, and atherosclerosis. Less known are garlic's potentially beneficial effects on earaches, diarrhea, sensitive teeth, stress reduction, and snakebites.

In the case of age-related vascular changes, garlic is thought to protect vascular endothelial cells by reducing oxidative stress.

Studies and reports have suggested that garlic is able to lower plasma lipids and offer plasma anticoagulant and antioxidant properties. Other studies found that garlic can support healthy blood pressure, healthy blood sugar and immunity.

Taking garlic and niacin together may boost the lipid-lowering abilities of both.

Plant Sterol Complex

Also known as: beta-sitosterol, rhamnol, cupreol, alpha-dihydrofucosterol, quebrachol

Plant sterols are active substances that naturally occur in plants, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and legumes, and have a similar chemical structure to that of cholesterol.

Incorporating plant sterols into a healthy diet may reduce the risk of heart disease and help to lower low density lipoproteins (LDL). According to experts, plant sterols may lower cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines and increasing bile acid secretions.

Although plant sterols are often added to margarines, the hydrogenated oils in margarine may be dangerous to the human cardiovascular system. Plant sterols are usually taken orally, but can also be applied topically to help soothe wounds and burns.

Policosanol

Also known as: 32-C, dotriacontanol, heptacosanol, tetracosanol, triacontanol

Policosanol is a blend of waxy alcohols derived from plant sources such as sugar cane and wheat germ oil. Policosanol is generally used for hyperlipidemia, decreasing myocardial ischemia in people with coronary heart disease, and as an anti-plaque agent.

It appears that policosanol helps lower cholesterol by inhibiting hepatic cholesterol synthesis and increasing the body's processing of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). High LDL signifies a higher risk of coronary trouble. Policosanol may even perform better than aspirin to reduce LDL and raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Studies have suggested that a daily intake of policosanol and omega-3 fatty acids improves both LDL and HDL cholesterol, and is well-tolerated by the body.

Needless to say, I am continuing the Cholestasys!

This was a reorder today. I started using the Cholestasys and for the next 3 months I added more oatmeal, oat bran, plus a little more fiber, and cinnamon. I also added some walking exercise about 3 to 5 days per week. Needless to say, I am continuing the Cholestasys.

-Chris M., (Louisianna)

My doctor told me to go ahead and give it a try.

I work out five days a week for about a half hour and stay active outside of that on the weekends skiing, water skiing etc. I am 54 years old and in reasonably good shape. My wife likes to cook (I know, lucky) but we have been off red meat for over 10 years and eat very healthy. I found Cholestasys and my doctor told me to go ahead and give it a try. After six months...my doctor actually wrote me up for Cholestasys so that I could use my flex plan to buy it.

-Matt W., (UT)

GREAT PRODUCT.

I bought a six month supply of Cholestasys. I wasn’t just surprised, I was amazed! I immediately made another purchase of this product. GREAT PRODUCT.

-Brian P., (GA)

Regulation of Homeopathic Treatments

Homeopathic remedies are prepared according to the guidelines of the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States (HPUS), which was written into law in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938. Homeopathic remedies are regulated in the same manner as nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. However, because homeopathic products contain little or no active ingredients, they do not have to undergo the same safety and efficacy testing as prescription and new OTC drugs.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does require that homeopathic remedies meet certain legal standards for strength, purity, and packaging. The labels on the remedies must include at least one major indication (i.e., medical problem to be treated), a list of ingredients, the dilution, and safety instructions. In addition, if a homeopathic remedy claims to treat a serious disease such as cancer, it needs to be sold by prescription. Only products for self-limiting conditions (minor health problems like a cold or headache that go away on their own) can be sold without a prescription.
